What does it really take to make a workplace zero waste?
It’s not just about better bins or smarter tech. It’s about people.
In our recent “Connecting the Dots: Zero Waste Solutions for the Workplace” roundtable, hosted by Circular Workplaces, sustainability experts shared how leading organisations are turning ambition into measurable impact, including insights from our very own Wyn Dormer.
The session explored practical ways workplaces are cutting waste through:
- Smarter reuse systems and AI-powered recycling.
- Better “binfrastructure” with clear signage, defined waste streams, and shaped apertures that make recycling intuitive.
- Behavioural insights that help people get it right every time.
As Wyn highlighted, many workplaces struggle with the 3 C’s of poor recycling:
Confusion. Complexity. Contamination.
The solution is to shift focus to the 3 E’s:
Easy. Engaging. Efficient.
When workplaces remove the hesitation — that two-second pause at the bin — recycling becomes instinctive. The results speak for themselves: some of our partners have cut general waste by over 50% and reduced contamination from 85% to just 7%.
Key Takeaways from the Roundtable
- Zero waste is a team effort.
Real progress happens when sustainability, FM, and employees work together. - Behaviour change drives results.
As Wyn said, “Behavioural change is the hidden engine of zero waste.” - Culture beats technology.
The tools exist — success comes from leadership, engagement, and consistency.
We’ll be sharing more insights and future events like this to help you make your workplace more sustainable, circular, and cost efficient.
Until then, enjoy the session, and let’s keep rethinking waste together.
